Gaia Serrini, a Molecular Biotechnology student from the University of Pisa and the School of Advanced Studies Sant’Anna, Italy, spent the last seven months at the Molecular Biomaterials group to develop her Master’s thesis project.
Under the supervision of Rui Pereira, a senior researcher in the group, and the guidance of Helena Azevedo, the MOBILIsE ERA Chair holder, Gaia developed a project aimed at evaluating the role of different basement membrane proteins in endothelial pericellular matrix deposition. Her work will contribute to the development of bioactive surfaces, helping to better mimic the physiological conditions of the blood-brain barrier and opening new avenues in pharmacology and bioengineering.
In Gaia’s words “I came to i3S to gain experience not only in research but also in working within a highly specialized and technologically advanced research centre – an environment rich in stimuli and international collaboration. This has been the most rewarding experience of my life, both professionally and personally.”; “While the project is still ongoing, I am truly satisfied with what we have accomplished in a relatively short time. I am also grateful to have been part of such an outstanding research group.”
We wish Gaia all the best for her future!
