Rui Pereira, researcher from the Molecular Biomaterials Group, was recognised in the 10th edition of the Rui Osório de Castro / Millennium bcp Award for his work on Medulloblastoma – the most common malignant brain tumour in children, constituting nearly 20% of all pediatric brain tumours.
The project “SAFE2TREAT_MB – Innovative in vivo approach to study the behaviour of pediatric brain tumours: therapeutic relevance and detection of new biomarkers”, led by Rui Pereira with the contributions of Helena Azevedo and Jorge Lima from i3S (1st picture below), intends to study medulloblastoma under experimental conditions that more faithfully reflect what happens in patients. Using tumour patient-derived cells, SAFE2Treat_MB will develop innovative therapeutics and allow for the creation of a biomarker database.
This annual prize, supported by the Millennium bcp Foundation, aims to promote the development of innovative projects and initiatives in the field of Pediatric Oncology. The award ceremony took place at the “12th Pediatric Oncology Seminar“, hosted by the ‘Fundação Rui Osório de Castro’, held at the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, in Lisboa, on Feb 28, where Rui received this honourable mention (2nd picture below).
